Nurofen: Effective Relief from Pain

A groundbreaking story

The story begins with the discovery of ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Nurofen.

It all started back in the 1950s when three scientists, led by Dr Adams from Boots Pharmaceuticals in Nottingham, set out to develop a painkiller that would be an alternative to aspirin – the top pain reliever of the day.1

What they discovered in 1961 was ibuprofen.1 It was capable of reducing pain and inflammation across a range of conditions, just like aspirin.1 Ibuprofen provided doctors around the world with an effective, alternative pain reliever they could recommend to their patients where appropriate.1

Ibuprofen – Nurofen by any other name

In 1969, ibuprofen was first launched as a prescription treatment for arthritis pain and inflammation.1 It wasn’t until 1983 when ibuprofen was launched in the UK as an over–the-counter medicine called Nurofen that it gained public recognition as an effective pain-reliever.1

Our story continues

Just like the development of ibuprofen, Nurofen continues the push to find more ways to provide effective pain relief for people in Ireland. This is reflected in the ever-increasing range of Nurofen products, like Nurofen Cold & Flu Tablets, and the development of ibuprofen formulations, such as Nurofen Express Tablets and Nurofen Rapid Relief Liquid Capsules that are absorbed up to twice as fast as standard ibuprofen.3,4 Our most recent innovation is Nurofen Durance – Ireland’s only 24-hour medicated plaster available over-the-counter.

We’ve been helping millions of people around the world ease their pain and fever but our story is just beginning. We’re committed to finding new ways to help the people of Ireland fight pain, so they can live their lives free of limitations.
